David Baldacci is a best selling author. His latest novel called “First Family” was converted to an eBook format. Amazon.com started selling the eBook for $15.00. Fans of David Baldacci revolted, and boycotted Amazon.com. They refused to pay $15.00 for an eBook. Up until then, readers have been paying $9.99 for an eBook, and they are not going to pay a penny more!
Unfortunately for David Baldacci, a lot of his fans refused to buy his latest eBook. “I love Baldacci’s writing,” one reader wrote who decided not to buy. “Sorry Mr. B - your price comes down or you’ll lose a lot of readers. I’ll skip it and move on!”
Popular authors are used to getting $26 for their hard copy books. They thought that they could charge $15 for the eBook version. The writers were stunned that the public does not want to pay more than $9.99 for an eBook.
Mr. Baldacci retorted that the cut rate cost of an eBook isn’t worth a writer’s effort. If the readers insist on only paying $9.99 for an eBook, then a lot of best selling authors are not going to convert their books to the eBook format.
Carolyn Reidy, the Chief Editor at Simon and Schuester, believes that eBooks should cost as much as the hard copy version. Ms. Reidy says that you are buying content - not format. However, the public is not warm to this idea. People believe it is ridiculous that books that are over one year old are selling for $9.99. The debate is going to continue for while on the cost of eBook.
